Cyclone Mocha is anticipated to avoid Bengal and head for the coast of Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Because the sea conditions are likely to be turbulent, the IMD has issued a warning advising fishermen, ships, trawlers, and small boats not to enter into the south-east Bay of Bengal and urging those in the region to return to the coast.

A low-pressure region that formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea on Monday is predicted to build into a cyclone and proceed towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast later this week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).The cyclone will be named Mocha recommended by Yemen.

The low-pressure area is predicted to condense into a depression by Tuesday evening and then intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday, according to IMD-Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

"The cyclonic storm will move north-northwest to the central Bay of Bengal until May 11 and then re-curve and move north-northeast to the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast," Mohapatra said.

The weather service also projected severe rain over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 9, as well as heavy rain in isolated areas from May 10-11. On May 9, squally winds of 50-60 kph with gusts up to 70 kph are expected over the southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and bordering Andaman Sea.Because the seas are anticipated to be rough, the IMD has issued an advice advising fishermen, ships, trawlers, and small boats not to travel into the south-east Bay of Bengal and urging those in the area to return to the coast.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told the public on Monday that essential precautionary measures had been taken and that there was no need to fear because Cyclone Mocha was not expected to make landfall in the state.

"There's no need to be concerned about Cyclone Mocha... it may not make landfall in West Bengal." However, residents in the state's coastal districts have been advised to exercise caution. As a precaution, alerts were issued in the Sunderbans and Digha on May 10 and 11, she said. Enter the link below to get a live update on Mocha's position..
